EAU CLAIRE — A new art exhibit, "Illustration 54," will be on display at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from Oct. 4-25 in the Foster Gallery of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The opening reception will be held from 7:30-9 p.m. Oct. 4 in the gallery.
"Illustration 54" is a traveling exhibit coordinated by the Society of Illustrators, whose mission is "to promote the art of illustration; to appreciate its history and evolving nature through exhibitions, lectures and education; and to contribute the service of its members to the welfare of the community at large."
The traveling exhibit will include a selection of pieces from the society's Annual Exhibition, a show of works chosen by a jury of professional illustrators and art directors from a pool of thousands of entries. The Foster Gallery show will feature works by 40 artists in the following categories: sequential/series, uncommissioned, editorial, book, advertising and institutional.
John Hendrix, one of the artists showcased in "Illustration 54," said that having one's work chosen for the Society of Illustrators' Annual Exhibition is the highest honor in the world of illustration.
"With 6,000 entries and around 350 selected to appear in the final show, it is such a rich showing of images throughout the narrative, publishing and editorial fields of illustration," Hendrix said. "The traveling exhibition reflects a small sampling of this great curated show, and seeing these images up close and in person is a real treat, especially for illustrators in the show."
Hendrix will present a lecture related to the exhibit at 9 a.m. Oct. 5 in Room 101 of the Haas Fine Arts Center, followed by a question-and-answer session in the Foster Gallery.
Foster Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, 6-8 p.m. Thursdays and 1-4:30 p.m. weekends.
