Transition from old to new Davies Center to begin in late May

May 1, 2012

Excellence is always under constructionEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will begin saying goodbye to the W.R. Davies University Center shortly after commencement May 19 and preparing for the opening of the new W.R. Davies Student Center in late July.

Food service in the old student center will close as of the end of business hours May 19. Campus food service for the summer will be offered only in the Hilltop Center for camps and conferences. Students, faculty and staff who will be on campus during the summer are asked to plan accordingly.

The old Davies Center, which opened in 1959, will be closed to students and the general public as of the end of business hours May 25. This will include the University Bookstore (see related news release).

The first-floor dining area of the old Davies Center will reopen for a three-day surplus sale from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. May 30-June 1. The sale will be open to the public. Among the items for sale will be meeting room chairs and tables, miscellaneous food service equipment, audiovisual equipment, office furniture, lounge furniture, cabinetry, computers, signage and food service tables. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted.

Beginning May 21, crews will start demolition of the old Davies Center east entrance, north-northeast ramped entrance and canopy, and tunnel/breezeway leading to Schofield Hall. As of May 21, the building's only entrance and exit point will be the south-facing doors on the east end (with all other doors still available for emergency exit).

During the first three weeks in June, offices housed in the old Davies Center gradually will be relocated to the new Davies Center. Demolition of the old Davies Center main structure will begin June 22, starting with a week of asbestos removal.

The new Davies Center is expected to be completed in late June and the building will be opened to students and the public in late July, although several food and beverage options will not immediately be available. Access to the new Davies Center initially will be from the south and east across the Phillips parking lot and via various campus routes to the west and northwest. Direct access to the new Davies Center across the Central Campus Mall will not open until late August.

An official grand opening for the new Davies Center will be held during UW-Eau Claire's homecoming weekend, Sept. 28-30.
