Major campus construction activity planned for summer 2012

May 1, 2012

Construction logo 200EAU CLAIRE — Several major construction projects will get under way at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire this summer, with visible activity beginning May 21. The projects will necessitate closure of the Central Campus Mall area and some building entrances and exits, changes in vehicle and pedestrian routes, and parking lot closures. (See related news release.)

"This construction activity represents the culmination of years of planning and collaboration involving our students, faculty, staff, community, UW System regents and administration, Division of State Facilities, and current and past local legislators," said Mike Rindo, UW-Eau Claire assistant chancellor for facilities. "While the process will result in considerable short-term disruption to campus, the long-term results will be transformative — and will greatly enhance both our educational and campus life facilities."

Summer projects on campus will include:

  • Continued work on the new W.R. Davies Student Center building and surrounding site. The new student center is expected to be completed and open to students by the start of the fall 2012 semester.
  • Demolition of the old W.R. Davies University Center and Campus School.
  • The start of construction on the university's new Education Building (a project expected to be completed in fall 2013).
  • The start of construction of the new green space in the area of the old Davies Center.
  • Construction of a new storm sewer from the site of the new Education Building to Garfield Avenue.
  • Construction of a new steam line from Hibbard Hall to Phillips Hall.
  • Reconstruction of the Haas Fine Arts parking lot.

Following is a timeline (which is subject to change) for summer campus construction:

May 21:

  • Installation of construction fencing begins on lower campus, eventually closing off the entire Central Campus Mall, Education Building site and future new campus green space to be developed on the site of the old Davies Center. (See a campus construction map showing the location of the construction fencing and a related news release with details regarding pedestrian and vehicle traffic on campus.)
  • Site work for the new Education Building begins.
  • Zorn Arena and Schneider parking lots close.
  • Demolition of the old Davies Center east entrance, north-northeast ramped entrance and canopy, and tunnel/breezeway leading to Schofield Hall begins.

May 21-June 1:

  • Construction of a temporary connector road from the Phillips parking lot to Putnam Drive on the east side of the Nursing Building.

May 21-June 4:

  • Relocation of the Children's Center from Campus School to The Priory (former St. Bede's Monastery) and salvage operations in Campus School.

May 21-Aug. 31:

  • Construction of new steam line from Hibbard Hall to Phillips Hall.

Late May-early June:

  • Construction of a new storm sewer from the site of the new Education Building to Garfield Avenue.

June 4:

  • Demolition of Campus School begins, making way for construction of the new Education Building.

June 11-Aug. 24:

  • Garfield Avenue from Park Avenue to just west of Hibbard Hall will be closed to traffic for a maximum of eight weeks during this period for steam line construction.

June 15-Aug. 31:

  • Haas Fine Arts parking lot reconstruction.

June 22-Aug. 11:

  • Demolition of the old Davies Center main structure begins, starting with a week of asbestos removal.

Late August (no later than Aug. 31):

  • Widening of the north-south sidewalk on the immediate east side of Schofield Hall. This sidewalk will serve as the only north-south corridor through the Central Campus Mall for the duration of the Education Building construction project.
