UW-Eau Claire to host Relay for Life event April 20-21April 12, 2012
EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Colleges Against Cancer organization will host the American Cancer Society Relay for Life event from 7 p.m. April 20 to 7 a.m. April 21. The event will be held at the McPhee Center's Ade Olson Track on upper campus.
Relay for Life is a community effort to raise funds for cancer research, education and patient services. The event resembles an athletic relay with teams of eight to 15 people taking turns running or walking around the track throughout the night. Other activities are planned, including pop-pong, a dodge-ball tournament, a pudgy bunny contest, duct-tape dress up, relay race activities and a scavenger hunt. There also will be performances by the UW-Eau Claire student groups Audacious, Innocent Men and the Gospel Choir.
This year 45 teams already are registered, with a total of 424 participants. CAC hopes to raise $45,000 during this year's spring campus event.
This year's theme is "Games," which includes Twister, Candyland, Battleship, Monopoly, Tetris and Apples to Apples. The theme was based on the slogan "Beating Cancer One Move at a Time."
The event will begin with a ceremony at 7 p.m. April 20. A cancer survivor will speak during this time. At 7:30 p.m., cancer survivors will kick off the event with a lap around the track. Luminaries surrounding the track will be lit at 10 p.m. in honor of cancer survivors and in memory of loved ones.
