Global Youth Service Day events set for April 21April 10, 2012
EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Blugold Beginnings and ECLIPSE AmeriCorps programs will celebrate Global Youth Service Day April 21 with volunteers working on a variety of projects from 9 a.m-1 p.m. in the Eau Claire community.
Global Youth Service Day is an annual campaign that encourages children to improve their communities through service and service-learning opportunities. The longest running and largest service event in the world, GYSD involves more than 100 countries and millions of kids.
Approximately 200 AmeriCorps members from UW-Eau Claire will volunteer in the community this year as part of the April 21 GYSD celebrations. Campus organizers are contacting numerous local organizations to see if they can use help from volunteers on Global Youth Service Day.
Sponsors of GYSD include State Farm, UnitedHealthcare, Disney, Sodexo, the Corporation for National and Community Service, and Learn and Serve America. The sponsors help support the various projects that Global Youth Service Day targets, including projects that address hunger, the environment, health and safety, education, disaster, human rights and civic engagement.
