March 28 banquet to raise hunger awarenessMarch 21, 2012
EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet event from 6-8 p.m. March 28 in the Council Fire Room of Davies Center.
Traditionally Oxfam America Hunger Banquets are used to highlight global hunger and its consequences. The Student Senate Student Life and Diversity Commission, which is organizing the event, has tailored this specific event to focus on domestic hunger, its causes and consequences with the goal of localizing the experience for students at UW- Eau Claire.
People attending the event will be classified as different income levels: low, middle or high income, and will be served a free meal according to their income level. Additional food will be served afterward to supplement the simulation meal. The free food will be sponsored by Blugold Dining by Sodexo.
The event will feature three guest speakers: Jeff DeGrave, UW-Eau Claire lecturer in geography; Rachel Keniston of the Community Table; and Christian Wise of Blugold Dining by Sodexo. The guest speakers will address food security, food and injustice, global economics in relation to food imports and the importance of food education.
There also will be an opportunity for students to connect with campus organizations that focus on topics related to domestic and global hunger.
At the event, the Student Life and Diversity Commission will collect donations of second-hand clothing and nonperishable food items. The clothing will be donated to the Sojourner House, a homeless shelter in Eau Claire.
The Oxfam America Hunger Banquet is free and open to the public.
