Preconstruction campus mall tree removal slated
for March 19-23
March 14, 2012
EAU CLAIRE — Some trees in the Central Campus Mall area and north of the new Davies Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will be removed during spring break week, March 19-23.
The removal is necessitated by the planned spring start of construction of the university's new Education Building and new landscaping that will follow the demolition of the old Davies Center, said Terry Classen, UW-Eau Claire director of facilities management.
Trees will be removed along campus mall walkways leading from the new Davies Center and Schneider Hall and past Zorn Arena to make way for the extension of steam lines and utilities through the area to the future Education Building site. Trees bordering the north side of Schneider Hall also will be removed.
Trees that are small enough will be relocated to other areas on campus rather than being cut down, and cutting during spring break was chosen to avoid cutting later in spring when birds will be nesting, Classen said.
Temporary barricades and fencing will be erected during cutting operations, restricting pedestrian traffic on the mall during the week.
The approximately 170,000-square-foot Education Building will be located between Schneider Hall and Zorn Arena. The project timeline calls for construction to begin in late spring 2012 with completion in late fall 2013.
