Area high school students compete in annual math meet at UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE — Thirty-one teams representing 16 area high schools participated in the 30th annual Mathematics Meet held in February at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Dr. Susan Harrison, professor of mathematics, and Dr. Alex Smith, professor and chair of the mathematics department, welcomed students and their sponsors from the following high schools: Aquinas (La Crosse), Augusta, Black River Falls, Chippewa Falls, Durand, Ellsworth, Lake Holcombe, McDonell (Chippewa Falls), Memorial (Eau Claire), North (Eau Claire), Owen-Withee, Regis (Eau Claire), Spencer, Stanley-Boyd, Viroqua and West Salem.

The Chippewa Falls team, Team AlgeBros, took first place in the large school division, AAA. Team AlgeBros, sponsored by Adam Coolidge, consisted of three pairs of brothers; Jasper and David Arneberg, Jameson and Joseph Krause, and Kyle and Brian Crocker.

The Chippewa Falls team, The Chi-Hi Pi Guys, took second place in the large school division, AAA. Jeff Keding was the team's sponsor. Team members were Stephan Hall, Mitchell Ritzinger, Austin Birch, Austin Thielen, Jeremy Facklam and Mitchell Iverson.

The West Salem team, The Panthers Power Team, took first place in the medium school division, AA. The team, sponsored by Chris Milne, included Michael Uebele, Christian Schran, Jennifer Kelley, Alexandra Lewis, Mikaela Hunter and Chris Stockus.

The Viroqua team, The Viroqua I, took second place in the medium school division, AA. John Lendosky was the sponsor. Team members were Rachel Feltes, Justin Houtler, Elizabeth Primmer, Chang Chen and Tiffany Voss.

The Regis team, The Binary Sudokus, took first place in the small school division, A. The team, sponsored by Sam Jackson, included Liang Xu, Rachel Liming, Yidou Ciu, Jake Larsen, Heesoo Lim and Yicheng Zhou.

The Regis team, The Binary High Fives, took second place in the small school division. A. Bryant Brenner was the team's sponsor. Team members were Alex Bates, Theresa Kim, Mira Won, Sooham Kim, Deng Lin and Menghan Sun.

First-place individual awardees were: Class AAA — Jasper Arneberg, Chippewa Falls; Class AA — Christian Schran, West Salem; and Class A — Liang Xu, Regis, Eau Claire. These students will receive a four-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.

Second-place individual awardees were: Class AAA — Lucy Wang, Memorial, Eau Claire; Class AA — Rachel Feltes and Justin Houtler, both from Viroqua; and Class A — Alex Bates, Regis, Eau Claire. These students receive a three-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.

Third-place individual awardees were: Class AAA — Brady Skifstad, North, Eau Claire; and Class A — Ryan Hannan, Spencer. These students will receive a two-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.

Fourth-place individual awardees were: Class AAA — Jacob Nesbit, Chippewa Falls; Class AA — Kelly Kroner, Aquinas, La Crosse; and Class A — Heesoo Lim, Regis, Eau Claire. These students will receive a one-credit hour scholarship to UW-Eau Claire.

Fifth-place individual winners were: in Class AAA — Jeremy Facklam, Chippewa Falls; Class AA — Chris Stockus, West Salem; Class A — a tie among Yachang Zhou and Sooham Kim, both from Regis, Eau Claire, and John Polus, McDonell, Chippewa Falls.

Sixth-place individual winners were: Class AAA — Katie Cable and Colton Schlosser, both from North, Eau Claire; and Class AA — Tiffany Voss, Viroqua.

Scholarships, valued at more than $333 per credit, are funded by a grant from Xcel Energy to the UW-Eau Claire department of mathematics.
