UW-Eau Claire to receive check Feb. 10 for winning recycling competitionFebruary 9, 2012
Representatives from the Student National Environmental Health Association and the campus Conservationists will accept the $1,500 check at 12:45 p.m. Feb. 10 in Davies Center. The two organizations were sponsors of the 2011 UW-Eau Claire RecycleMania competition.
The 2012 challenge is under way, with UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stout competing to see which campus will rank higher in RecycleMania to win the prize.
"I thought offering a $1,500 donation to the university that can place higher in the RecycleMania contest would be a great way to promote our interest in recycling and environmental stewardship in a friendly, competitive manner," said Mark Vinall, Veolia area manager. "We have a very good working relationship, and this is a small way to help give back to the departments and students who are going to help shape the world that we live in."
RecycleMania began in 2001 as a contest between Ohio University and Miami University in Ohio to increase recycling on their campuses. The competition expanded to include colleges and universities across the United States and Canada.
During a10-week period — Jan. 22-March 31 — UW-Eau Claire will promote waste prevention as part of the competition.
The Student National Environmental Health Association, the campus Conservationists, Housing and Residence Life, and the Student Office of Sustainability are collaborating on the project this year.
