The Adding Machine with humor and pathos tells the story of an anti-hero, Mr. Zero caught in a dehumanizing technological world. After finding out that he is being replaced by an adding machine, Zero kills his boss thus embarking on an expressionistic journey through life and after-life. Written in the 1920's Elmer Rice prophetically speaks to contemporary issues such as racism, technology, job outsourcing, celebrity, cultural debasement, and hypocritical moral standards.
