The UW-Eau Claire band program, comprising the Wind Symphony, Symphony Band, University Band, Blugold Marching Band, and Blugold Athletic Band offers a rewarding and enriching musical experience for more than 400 UW-Eau Claire students each year. Built on a long tradition of excellence, the UWEC band program offers a variety of concert and athletic bands designed to meet the artistic and educational needs of UW-Eau Claire students, regardless of major area of study.
We are all musicians, and regardless of your level of participation, you are a valued part of the proud band tradition at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The UWEC Wind Symphony includes approximately 60 undergraduate student musicians who perform as a full wind symphony and also as smaller chamber wind groups. The Wind Symphony is comprised of the most outstanding wind and percussion majors in the Department of Music and Theatre Arts and gifted non-music majors who are selected by audition each semester. The group is dedicated to the performance of the finest wind repertoire, regardless of period or number of instrumental forces. Flexible instrumentation and player rotation provide members of the ensemble with a variety of responsibilities, challenges, and playing experiences. The ensemble provides members the opportunity to broaden performance and teaching skills by experiencing repertoire at the highest level.
The Wind Symphony has performed at many regional, national, and international conferences including: Music Educators National Conference, College Band Directors National Association, Wisconsin State Music Conference, Illinois Music Educators Association Convention, National Band Association - Wisconsin Chapter Convention, and the International Tuba Euphonium Conference. The Wind Symphony frequently records for music publishers including Daehn Publications and JPM Music.The Wind Symphony performs at least two concerts each semester and participates on an annual spring concert tour. The ensemble rehearses Monday and Wednesday from 2-3:50pm and Friday from 3-3:50pm in the Haas Fine Arts Center.
Symphony BandDr. Phillip A. Ostrander, Conductor
The Symphony Band, an ensemble comprised of music majors and talented non-music majors, is committed to the study and performance of the finest standard and contemporary works for band. This ensemble is open to university students by audition and performs four concerts a year with a concert tour each spring. The Symphony Band rehearses Tuesday and Thursday from 2-3:15pm and Friday from 2-2:50pm in the Haas Fine Arts Center.
University BandDr. Randal C. Dickerson, Conductor
The University Band is open to all UW-Eau Claire students regardless of major. The band is comprised of talented musicians from many academic disciplines as well as music majors, some of whom choose to perform on a secondary instrument. No auditions are required for membership in the University Band. The band rehearses on Mondays in the fall from 4:00-5:50 p.m. and on Tuesdays in the spring from 4:00-5:50 p.m. in the Haas Fine Arts Center.
Blugold Marching BandDr. Randal C. Dickerson, Director
The University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire Blugold Marching Band (BMB) is one of the largest and most active bands in the upper Midwest. The BMB regularly performs at Blugold home football games, contest exhibitions, NFL games, stage shows, and other selected venues. Recent performances include a tour of Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand (2014), stage shows in Italy and Greece (2008) and in Paris and Venice (2010). In January, 2012 the BMB played a series of concerts in Rome followed by a 12 night Mediterranean cruise to Greece, Turkey, and Israel. Later the same year the BMB was the featured exhibition band at Bands of America Super-Regionals in St. Louis, MO. In October, 2014 the BMB will be the guest exhibition band at the finals of Bands of America Super-Regionals in Indianapolis, IN
BMB membership is open to UW-Eau Claire students of any major. The band is made up of students from every academic department on campus. While music is the most populous major in the band, 70% of the band members are not music majors. Membership in the BMB has remained steady at 300 members for the past several years and represents the US from coast (California) to coast (Vermont).
Membership is selective and competitive and is limited to 300 members. The application window opens on February 15th and continues until July 1stor until all positions are filled. Some sections fill very quickly so early application is recommended. Acceptance into colorguard, dance line and drum line requires an audition following the application. Blugold Athletic BandNicholas Junker, Director
The Blugold Athletic Band is a student run, faculty advised Student Organization. With a membership of over 60 musicians, the BAB performs at various UWEC sporting events including Men's and Women's Basketball and Men's Hockey. The time commitment required for the BAB is 3-5 rehearsals in November and 10-12 games from November-March, and membership is open to all UWEC students at any playing level. In May of 2010 The Blugold Athletic Band performed for 1,000 5th graders participating in the Blugold Beginnings, a new initiative to inspire students, especially underrepresented, low income or first generation students, to pursue a college education.
