Our goal for middle schools attending our jazz festival is to have the ability to participate in a separate Middle School Festival with special middle school clinicians and guest lecturers in their own building. Middle school directors may choose to enjoy the educational value in the many topical clinics, concerts by UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensembles and masterclass clinic by our special guest, all located in the same building, or choose to venture out to the high school jazz festival in a nearby location.
In addition to the many middle school activities, students can enjoy a full day of hour by hour clinics, concerts and masterclasses at the high school festival. Be sure not to miss the festival Guest Artist masterclasses starting at 3 pm in Gantner Concert Hall.
To make your performance an enjoyable one, we have selected many of the best adjudicators in the field of jazz in both performance and education, in competitive and non-competitive venues. We are especially pleased to welcome Nnenna Freelon (vocals), Benny Golson (saxophone), Dave Weckl (percussion) and Chris Brubeck with Triple Play as our guest artists.
Located on our Jazz Festival website you will find the bios for our guest artists, a tune database, listing of the festival rules, the participant personnel form, a tune database form, and the ensemble layout form (see the menu bar on the left). We encourage you to pass information on to your local paper and to add information regarding your participation in the festival.
Middle School Day is Saturday, March 29th. The Friday and Saturday night concerts on March 28 & 29 will feature Benny Golson, Dave Weckl, and Chris Brubeck, as well as the days honor bands and our own UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I. The Friday evening concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the Saturday evening concert will start at 7:00 p.m. in the Eau Claire Memorial High School Auditorium.
Following the Friday night concert, have your students participate in the Open Jam Session. The Open Jam Session has traditionally been very inspirational and a lot of fun for our participants, directors, and guest artists alike.
