Junior High School - Performance Standards
I. DEFINITIONS
* Big Band Eleven or more musicians
* Combo Three-Ten Musicians
II. PERFORMANCE
A. TIME
1.) Junior High Schools will be allowed 30 minutes (Time includes set-up, tuning, performance, critiques, and tear down).
B. RECOMMENDED CRITEREA
1.) Groups are encouraged to perform THREE charts, including one up-tempo and one ballad style.
C. CRITIQUES
1.) All Bands will be judged on overall performance and will receive one oral and two written critiques from three qualified judges.
2.) Competition performance will be within each division entered.
3.) Outstanding qualified artists will adjudicate in both areas.
4.) Adjudicators will work with ensembles if time permits with-in their competitive category or non-competitive category.
D. COMPETITION AND NON-COMPETITIVE
1.) Ensembles may participate on a non-competitive basis.
2.) Members of non-competitive ensembles are eligible for solo awards.
E. SOLO AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS
1.) IAJE solo citations (unlimited)
2.) Scholarships: More information will be sent in your second information packet.
F. MUSICAL SCORES
1.) IAJE requires that scores (full or condensed) of all charts be provided to all adjudicators.
2.) There will be three adjudicators at each performance site, please have three copies of your score available.
G. SIGHT READING
1.) All competitive Big Bands are required by IAJE to sight read a composition. Sight reading will be held immediately after your performance time.
2.) Sight reading is equivalent to 25% of your total score.
3.) Non-Competitive Big Bands may elect to sight read. Please call the Jazz Festival Office at (715) 836-4092 to make prior arrangements.
III. JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL BIG BAND WINNERS
A. All Junior High School Ensembles will perform on Saturday, March 29, 2008.
B. At 5:15, the Honors Big Band will be announced in the Memorial High School Auditorium.
C. The Honors Big Band will perform one selection on the Saturday evening concert at Memorial High School.
D. Awards will be given in each category for the following:

IV. EVALUATION SHEETS, TAPES, AND PLACEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT
A. Sheets, tapes, and score recaps may be picked up (by the director) following the awards announcements at Zorn Arena, UW-Eau Claire .
B. The director may also choose to pick up his/her sheets, tapes, and placement announcements prior to the night concert at the IAJE Table, directly outside of the Memorial High School Auditorium.
C. We encourage all directors to pick up their packets before the end of the festival.
V. CLINICS
A. Clinics will be presented throughout both days of the festival by the guest artists and selected clinicians.
B. Clinics are open to all festival participants and their directors. They are also free and open to the public.
VI. REGISTRATION
A. Registration can be completed in one of two ways:
1.) Upon receiving the UW-Eau Claire Jazz Festival brochure the director may fill out and return the form to the University Service Center, with payment (no purchase orders or unaccompanied registration forms please). For multiple ensembles the director may photo copy the registration form.
2.) Schools may fill out the registration form on-line by going to the registration link on the UW-Eau Claire Jazz Festival Homepage:

Once on the registration page the director should print out the completed form and send it to the UW-Eau Claire Service Center, along with payment (no purchase orders or unaccompanied registration forms please).

Eligibility:
Participation of school groups is limited to groups with students attending an accredited school
Non-Student musicians may not perform with High School Large Ensembles that are in competitive categories, unless they are in non-competitive categories
Classification:
High School Ensembles must compete with-in the following categories (Enrollment of students in grades 10-12, fall semester 2007.)
AA (over 1500 students)
A (1100-1499 students)
B (600-1099 students)
C (under 600 students)
Non-Competitive (any school may participate within this category)
· Any school may enter more than one large ensemble or combo in competition. The top group must perform within the school enrollment limits. Other ensembles may perform at the same level or in lower classes.
· A school may enter a higher class than its own enrollment category; however, it may not enter a lower class.
· Combos are not classified

B. Evening Concerts:
1.) Will be held the Friday and Saturday nights of the festival.
2.) The Friday and Saturday Evening concerts will be held at the Memorial High School Auditorium in Eau Claire. These concerts are general admission and will feature the day's winning honor bands and combos, UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I, and the festival guest artists. For ticket information please refer to Section VIII.
VIII. TICKETS
A. Concerts are open to the public and tickets may be purchased through the UW-Eau Claire Service Center (715/836-3727) or at the door.
B. Admission Costs are:
General Public $15.00
UW-Eau Claire Faculty/Staff $10.00
UW-Eau Claire Student ID $ 8.00
Students and Senior Citizens $ 8.00
Student Participants $ 8.00
C. In order to receive tickets before the festival, we ask that orders be made no later than Wednesday, March 26, 2008.
IX. EQUIPMENT
A. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will provide chairs, stands, risers, an acoustic piano and a basic sound system for your performance.
B. We regret that we cannot provide electric pianos, amplifiers, drum sets, extension cords, or any other equipment.
C. If you need vibes, please make prior arrangements.
X. EQUIPMENT STORAGE
A. There will be limited, if any storage area for any ensembles instruments or equipment. Because of the limited amount of space we ask that students keep their instruments with them and that the rest of the school's equipment, when not in use, be kept on buses or in cars and trucks. The UW-Eau Claire Jazz Festival will not be responsible for loss of or damage to any instruments or equipment. We suggest that you clearly label your equipment and have your students label their instruments, etc., with school name, address and phone number to prevent mix-ups and to help return lost items.

1.) All Bands will be judged on overall performance and will receive one oral and two written critiques from three qualified judges.
2.) Competition performance will be within the division entered.

4.) An adjudicator will work with each ensemble for a 30 minute period following their performance.
