What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique is a method that works to change (movement) habits in our everyday activities. It is a simple and practical method for improving ease and freedom of movement, balance, support and coordination. The technique teaches the use of the appropriate amount of effort for a particular activity, giving you more energy for all your activities. It is not a series of treatments or exercises, but rather a reeducation of the mind and body. The Alexander Technique is a method that helps a person discover a new balance in the body by releasing unnecessary tension.
James Brody began his study of the Alexander Technique in 1973 with William Conable at The Ohio State University and has since studied with Marjorie Barstow, Barbara Conable, Elisabeth and Lucia Walker, and Erika Whittaker. He completed teacher certification at The Alexander Foundation in Philadelphia and is a teaching member of Alexander Technique International. He has developed graduate and undergraduate courses at the University of Colorado, directs an annual Summer Program at CU, and for ten years taught on the William Bennett International Flute Courses and Clifford Benson International Chamber Music Courses in Surrey, England. He has created a Wellness Program for Musicians, a team of health care professionals on staff at CU (including a physician, physical therapist, and psychotherapist), to address the unique problems musicians face in their development and careers.
