Mathematics Education

The mathematics educators at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire have the goal to develop our students into effective, inspired and reflective teachers who understand mathematics and how children and young adults learn mathematics. While we do not endorse any specific curricula, we give our students the exposure to standards-based and traditional curricula as well as the knowledge to see the strengths and weaknesses in any textbook. We prepare our students to become teacher-leaders in their community and profession by giving them the ability to reflect on their own teaching and analyze situations objectively regarding pedagogical approaches and curricular choices. We teach our students about the objectives and goals of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics as well as the Wisconsin Academic Standards. We educate students to have a deep knowledge of mathematics and of the teaching and learning of mathematics.

Many statistics indicate that teaching is a field that is presently overcrowded, yet there is a national shortage of teachers in the mathematical sciences. Although this shortage is especially acute at the secondary school level, increasing expectations of mathematical achievement by students in the elementary and middle schools will ensure an increasing demand for highly qualified mathematics teachers for these grades. Those considering elementary-middle school teaching will find that a mathematics minor significantly enhances their employment potential.

Post-secondary teaching requires an advanced degree. Students with this career objective should plan their studies accordingly.
