Employment and Research Opportunities
The department employs qualified mathematics students as tutors in our mathematics laboratory or as paper graders and student assistants for lower level classes. Many students find this a convenient source of on campus, part-time employment, earning several hundred dollars per semester. Students may also receive stipends while participating in internally or externally funded student/faculty research projects. The department is expanding its internship program, providing on-the-job training for students prior to graduation.
Student-Faculty Collaborative Research
UWEC is a designated by the Board of Regents as a Center of Excellence for Student-Faculty Collaborative Research, and UWEC mathematics students work with faculty in a variety of research projects in pure mathematics, computational and applied mathematics, statistics and mathematics education. Incoming freshmen are eligible for Blugold fellowships, where they receive scholarships and stipends to support their collaborative work with faculty. Internships
An internship is a short-term work experience emphasizing learning. In an internship, you become a worker in an organization and observe and reflect on what happens there. Internships that provide supervised on-the-job experience in an area of interest with mathematical content can receive up to three semester hours of course credit through the Department of Mathematics. An internship can significantly enhance a graduate's career prospects, and is a valuable learning opportunity. The Department is expanding its internship program, and students interested in internships should contact Career Services, in consultation with the Department. Except for special circumstances, mathematics students should not have to consider unpaid internships.
A limited number of paid internships are available for student teachers during their professional semester.
