STAN & YVONNE HILLESTAD SCHOLARSHIP

Amount: $1,000 per year

Available: First award 2007-08

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The Stanley and Yvonne Hillestad Scholarship was established in 2006 with a generous gift from UW-Eau Claire alumni Stanley and Yvonne Hillestad. The endowed scholarship will provide an annual award to an outstanding mathematics major who has demonstrated great potential and financial need. First preference shall be given to a student who has been participating in the Excellence in Mathematics and Computer Science Scholarship (EMACS) program who has completed his/her scholarship eligibility for this program and who still needs financial support. If there are no students participating in the EMACS program who apply for this scholarship, the mathematics department scholarship committee has the option of selecting a recipient based upon the following criteria: applicants must be of sophomore or first semester junior standing (30-74) who have completed or are currently enrolled in Math 216, declared mathematics major and have a Math and cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 each. The recipient must be a full-time student who has been accepted into the UW-Eau Claire teacher education program. Financial need is to be a primary consideration in selecting the recipient. Any student meeting the eligibility requirements may apply.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

  1. To be considered, a student must complete an application form, available in the Mathematics Office or online .
  2. As part of the application, each applicant must write a brief (50-100 words) statement concerning career objectives.
  3. Each applicant must have two math faculty members (not necessarily from UWEC) write a letter of support to the Chair of the Awards Committee.

SELECTION PROCEDURE

Selection will be based on demonstrated performance and potential in math including such things as GPA, career objective, communication skills, creativity, ingenuity, reliability, enthusiasm for the discipline, and participation in class and other Department activities.

SELECTION DEADLINE

Early April. The announcement of the recipient should coincide with UWEC’S Honor’s Week. The recipient should be recognized at the Honors Week event of the department of their major.

NOTIFICATION

The recipient will receive notification and the department chair will complete and submit a “Scholarship Award Form” to the Financial Aid office.

SPECIAL NOTES

Stanley Hillestad graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1958 with a BS degree in mathematics and taught high school mathematics for 28 years. He also played intercollegiate tennis as a Blugold and continued for many years as the Memorial High School tennis coach. Yvonne Hillestad attended UW-Eau Claire in the 1950s as part of her nursing education and worked for many years as a nurse in Eau Claire. They are lifelong Eau Claire residents.
