How to Begin
The intent of this tutorial is to provide assistance to off-campus learners who:
  • Do not have access to on-campus library instruction

  • Want a refresher on how to conduct research

This tutorial will help you:
  1. Identify information needs.
  2. Locate information.
  3. Evaluate what you find.
  4. Effectively use information.
There are seven modules (listed under Contents ), which can be completed in any order. Begin with any module that will help to heighten your comprehension of the research process.

Each module can be completed in 20 minutes or less. If you are new to the research process, you may want to work through the natural order of the modules as you progress through the research steps.

Contents (Seven Modules)
  1. Information Basics

  2. Recognizing What You Need

  3. Research Problems

  4. Searching Tips

  5. Evaluating Information

  6. Troubleshooting Tips

About This Tutorial

Development Team: The Research Tutorial was developed by a working group of the Council of Wisconsin Libraries (COWL) Distance Education Committee. COWL is the governing board of a consortium of 500 multitype libraries in Wisconsin. The working group was composed of librarians from five of the University of Wisconsin campuses: Eau Claire, Green Bay, Madison, Parkside, and Platteville.

The goal of the tutorial working group was to produce a flexible and generic research-oriented instruction module intended for use by all students of the University of Wisconsin new to the research process, but particularly geared for students taking courses at a distance, who might not have convenient access to in-person library instruction.

This Research Tutorial is a product of the collaborative efforts of Ulrike Dieterle, UW- Madison, Health Sciences Library; Betsy Richmond and Jill Markgraf, UW-Eau Claire; Anne Kasuboski, UW- Green Bay; Linda Piele, UW-Parkside; and Debbie Cardinal, Cheryl Olson, and Sheila Zillner, Wisconsin Library Services (WiLS).
