Web Resources by Discipline
The links below lead you to websites of academic interest in the following disciplines. Some have been gleaned from UW-Eau Claire faculty recommendations, others from reviews in the collection development literature. These are non-commercial sites.
Geography:
- AGI GIS Dictionary: An online dictionary of GIS terms, developed by the Association for Geographic Information and the Department of Geology, University of Edinburgh.
- Ancient World Mapping Center (AWMC), Downloadable maps and information about cartography of the ancient world.
- Color Landform Atlas of the United States: Provides excellent maps of varying types, as well as extensive links for additional map and related geographic information for the United States.
- GEONet-NIMA: Access to the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) database of foreign feature names, excluding the United States and Antarctica, also includes links to the Foreign Names Information Bulletin, Helpful Links for GNS Users and Information on Codes for Geopolitical Entities.
- Internet Map Resources: The site presents an extensive collection of map resources available on the Internet. Categories include: Cartograhic Reference, City Map Sites, Country Map Sites, Historical Map Sites, State and Weather Map Sites.
- Iraq: the cradle of civilization at risk: cultural heritage and historical monuments, This site provides a brief introduction (in English and German) to the cultural heritage crisis resulting from the ongoing military conflict in Iraq, together with links to a variety of authoritative Web resources on this timely topic.
- National Science Digital Library: The NSDL is intended to support science education at all levels, from pre-kindergarten to post-doctoral, including mathematics, the sciences, engineering and technology.
- Spatial Data Catalog: Searchable collection of records for data that are designed for use with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software. Each record includes information on how to obtain the data, e.g., a link to the Library's online Spatial Data Server or a Library to call.
- U.S. Geological Survey: Text version of the USGS Website, includes headlines, news releases, education, topic list, products and data. The Website also links to the USGS pages for Biology, Geology, Mapping, Water, Products, Glossary and Site Map.
- Wind energy resource atlas of the United States, Reviewed in 2003dec CHOICE.The site presents maps of all areas of the US, showing wind speeds, direction, variability, seasonal fluctuations, and elevations.
