The links below lead you to websites of academic interest in the following disciplines. Some have been gleaned from UW-Eau Claire faculty recommendations, others from reviews in the collection development literature. These are non-commercial sites.
Biology:
- About Herbs, Botanicals & Other Products (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center):A database of information about medicinal herbs, botanicals and other products, such as vitamins and other supplements.
- Biology: Created by Jim W. Kimball, retired professor from Tufts and author. The web site links to an online biology textbook, terms, biological topics and essays in biology.
- Biology Online: Biology Online seemingly offers all that is biology, at least online.
- The Biology Project: The Biology Project of the University of Arizona. An interactive site for the study of biology, including problems sets and tutorials for selected topics.
- BioMed Central Journals: Provides 100+ open-access biomedical electronic journals. Articles are also immediately available on publication thru PubMed Central.
- Biotechnology: Homepage of the National Center for Biotechnology Information, including links to general information, GenBank, Molecular and Literature databases, and genomic biology.
- Birds Of North America Usage Tools : An online index to the publication "Birds in North America" by issue number and taxonomically.
- Entrez: Searchable protein and nucleotide databases, "free" from NIH. Includes genetics information from Medline, GenBank, EMBL, DDBJ, PIR, SWISS-PROT, PRF, and PDB.
- Flora and Fauna of the Great Lakes Region: Provides access to selected images and data for specimen collections of the Univ Michigan Museum of Zoology (Fish and Mammal Divisions) and the Fungus Collection of the Univ Michigan Herbarium. Map- and text-searchable.
- The Forest Service Database: A new resource covering the holdings of the Forest Service Library Network. The database includes over 180,000 records of natural resources literature, with over 4,500 links to full-text publications.
- HealthWeb: A collaborative project of medical libraries to collect, organize and make available significant medical and allied health information from the World Wide Web. Seventy-six medical and allied health topics are represented, from AIDS to Women's Health.
- HealthWeb : nursing : Provides information on nursing education, research, resources, organizations and career development.
- Kimball's Biology Pages : Award winning site which can function as an encyclopedic dictionary of biology. Originally derived from Kimball's Biology text. Includes a search engine, table of contents, illustrations, and biology news.
- The National academies: Up-to-date information about a broad range of science, technology, and health policy issues.
- National Science Digital Library: The NSDL is intended to support science education at all levels, from pre-kindergarten to post-doctoral, including mathematics, the sciences, engineering and technology.
- Nearctica: native conifers of North America An introduction, a key to genera and species, access to genera and species from a checklist, and six selected special conifers from various parts of North America.
- Protein Data Bank: Worldwide repository for the processing and distribution of 3-D biological macromolecular structure data.
- Virtual Hospital: Originally based at the University of Iowa, the Virtual Hospital now provides links to useful Internet medical reference and health promotion tools for health care providers and patients, including thousands of textbooks and booklets.
- Visible Human Server Three dimensional models of human anatomy.
- Wisconsin Vascular Plants This Wisconsin State Herbarium database of vascular plants in Wisconsin is searchable by name, habitat, status and county. Other features of the site include a guide to "What's Blooming" around Wisconsin, a key to the conifers of Wisconsin, and information about other current projects of the Wisconsin State Herbarium.
