Spring Means Gardening - Get Your Hands Dirty

It's spring and flowers are popping up all over. In honor of this annual renewal, we offer you a collection of articles which reflect renewal within the library ("Stacks on the Move"), new varieties of flora (CDs and graphic novels) and the making room for new growth ("Weeding Our Collections"). Enjoy, but don't get too excited. There's still a chance of frost!

Stacks on the Move

During this summer and fall, a new Special Collections and Archives area will be built on the fifth floor of the library. In order to accommodate this new area, we must remove a number of book stacks and weed the collection of unused or little used materials (see the next article for more on this). At the same time, we will be reconfiguring much of the remaining stacks to make it easier for our users to find materials and also to create wider aisles that are more accessible, particularly for wheelchair users.

The move of the stacks will require both temporary and permanent rearrangements of the furniture, including study carrels and tables, on the fifth floor. Once this project is completed and the new Special Collections built, there will be far more upholstered furniture on the floor than at present and a better mix of tables, carrels, and comfortable, casual seating.

This is a massive project and we are doing our best to minimize disruptions in service. However, in the near future a portion of the collections on the fifth floor may not be where you would expect them to be and the floor will be much noisier than we would prefer. Because of that, we have temporarily designated the fourth floor, rather than the fifth floor, as the "Quiet Floor" where we ask students and other users to be as quiet as possible and to turn off their cell phones. Weeding our Collections

McIntyre Library staff is concentrating efforts on weeding our book collections in order to both make newer titles more prominent and to remove damaged, outdated, superseded, and unused materials from the collection. Weeding will also help us consolidate the collections, creating the space that is needed to accomplish the remodeling that was described earlier.

All books published before 1990 are considered for weeding, taking into consideration usage (check-outs and in-house use), presence of duplicate copies either in this library or in other UW System libraries, and listing in Books for College Libraries standard bibliography. As we start working on each subject areas, Departments on campus are being contacted. The books that you will be asked to look at have already met our criteria for discard, and we are looking for you to share your expertise in case we've missed some reason that a book should be retained.

We are working on 5th floor now to provide space for the move of Special Collections, and then we will move on to the 4th floor to create additional study space. Collection Development staff will inform Department Bibliographers of weeding progress and date changes as the project proceeds. The Bibliographers will be your source of information, so keep in touch with them.

The Man in the Red Van

The van and delivery agent are part of the "red box currier service." This Wisconsin Libraries Distribution Service van makes stops Monday through Friday at all UW System libraries and delivers any books, videos, and other materials that you have ordered through Universal Borrowing. If you are doing research this summer, you don't have to travel to other campuses. Save time and gas money by borrowing materials through our Universal Borrowing service. Follow the directions to order your materials and the man in the red van will deliver your order to the McIntyre Library circulation desk in 2-3 days.

Ask Mac

Hey, Mac:

My students don't understand how to cite their sources and are sometimes loath to ask. Do you know of any good Internet sites that I can put in my course syllabus to help students cite sources more effectively?

A "Cite" for Sore Eyes

Dear Cite:

The library has some very good guides on their website that students can use to format their citations. One site that does the work for the students is the citation machine. Just by typing information into text boxes, the machine spits out citations in either MLA or APA style. It allows students to cite articles found through library databases, as well as books, journals and other common locations.

The library also offers guides on how to cite sources. We have a guide for MLA and APA style (including links to other styles at the bottom), and another for online sources. If all else fails, don't forget the reference desk! The friendly librarians can help your students find the MLA and APA manuals. With all this help available to your students, there will be no excuse for sloppy citations.

Have a question for "Ask Mac"? We'd love to hear from you. Send your question to lonnincg@uwec.edu.
