McIntyre Library, Won't You Pon da Replay
Welcome to this year's first issue of McIntyre Library's monthly e-newsletter.
You may have seen us last year - now we're back with new info and a new attitude
for the introduction of the new e-newsletter system. The library offers countless
advantages to faculty and staff,
and we hope that each month you'll let us share some of them with you. We'll
keep you up-to-date with the latest library doings, as well as offer research
tips to save you time.
You also may have noticed the music-themed TOC. The answers
to the songs and artists alluded to appear at the end of the newsletter. |
Let the Sun Shine In
Do laws such as the Freedom of Information Act
fulfill their promise to guarantee openness in government? How do laws passed and policies/regulations
implemented since 9/11 encourage secrecy or openness?
See, hear and participate in "Are We Safer in the Dark? A Dialogue on Open Government and Secrecy," a 90-minute conversation
with national experts who will discuss government secrecy, open government, Sunshine laws and how
they affect public safety and your life. Video montages illustrate the effects of the lack of
government transparency on communities and individuals. During the real time satellite
transmission, telephone and e-mail connections will allow audience input. Come participate and the dialogue
and invite your classes!

Library in L2023 A-C.

Smiling Happy People Holding Jobs
The past few months have seen the library hire three new people, one person retire, and changes in job duties for others:
New Faces
- Stop at the reference desk, where you will find librarian Karen Bronshteyn answering questions and
helping students with their research. E-mail or call her
Wednesday through Friday at 836-5961 for an InfoLit session or a consultation.
- Web Developer Deb Klossner will work mornings on the
library Web site. E-mail her with comments and suggestions or call her at 836-3588.
- After March 6 we will welcome Special Collection/University Archivist Colleen McFarland, the
newest library staff member. Colleen's goal is to bring archival and special collections materials
into the undergraduate educational experience. E-mail her or call 836-3873.
Retirement and Adjustment
Periodicals Public Service Coordinator Cotsy Jones has (happily) attained the rank of retiree
after 27 years at UW-Eau Claire. We wish her the best in retirement.
Many of the public service duties in the periodicals
department were handed into the capable hands of Laurie Roach,
who you may know from her work in government publications. Laurie will be in L-2002, M-F, 10:30 to 3:00. Departmental authorization requests and annual billing notices for the periodicals department copy
service will be handled by Periodicals Public Supervisor Mimi King.

Ingenta Went B-Y-E. Other Options for T-O-C as Easy as A-B-C
Some of you have been devoted users of
the INGENTA Table of Contents Alert Service. It was formerly purchased
by the Madison campus who had to cancel their contract. INGENTA was deemed too expensive and it was felt that other,
less expensive,
options existed.
Some of the larger campuses are attempting to
create a favorable group contract that would allow us to re-subscribe as a group and thus pay a much smaller
fee than otherwise. This contract would include "unlimited" users, and, while we cannot ensure that we will
be able to re-subscribed (this depends on how many campuses are interested and how much will be
charged), we would like to be sure there is interest on our campus before we commit any funds.
If you have used INGENTA TOC in the past and want to get it again, or if you want to start a new
subscription should the contract go through, please notify Mimi King by March 15.
Several of our vendors, ISI, ProQuest, SilverPlatter, CSA, ABC-CLIO, and EBSCO offer
TOC and saved search alerts, as well as subject and citation alerts, which might suffice as a replacement for INGENTA TOC. SearchSpot also offers an Alert Function that saves searches run by authenticated users, runs them automatically,
and e-mails the notification to the user. If you would like to learn more about setting up alerts with
any of these vendors, contact Mimi King, 836-4958, for a consultation.

Ask Mac (I think he'll know)
Hey, Mac:
I was trying to do some research over break. I kept getting sent to something called SearchSpot.
What is this, and will it make things easier or harder for me?
Sincerely, Seeing Spots
Dear
Spots:
SearchSpot is
an amazing new tool that is making our library an easier place to navigate. It allows you to
search multiple databases, the library catalog, websites and more. You can create your own
unique list of up to 8 resources to search simultaneously, or use the categories that the
library has already created to search by discipline. If you enjoy seeing all your results in
one place, you'll love SearchSpot. As if SearchSpot wasn't working hard enough already, it
allows you to save your results, and to refine the results that you've already found.
SearchSpot will allow you to look in databases that you hadn't thought to try, without taking
any more of your precious time. You can use SearchSpot from the library homepage, simply by
clicking on me. Have fun searching!
Have a question for "Ask Mac"? We'd love to hear from you. Send your question
to lonnincg@uwec.edu.
