Listening Room - Sonata in A Minor (For the Piano)
Although Ross Hastings played the piano, he wrote very little solo piano music and none appears to have been published. The Sonata in A Minor was composed in 1938 while Ross was still living in California. It comprises three movements, is tuneful, and has a touch of "Hollywood" about it. An impassioned work with broad sweeping themes and dramatic inflections reinforced by enormous dynamic levels, the first movement ends with the dynamic level of "ffff".
This recording of the Sonata in A Minor is from a live performance on May 10, 1998 in Gantner Concert Hall at the dedication of the Ross Hastings Music Listening Library, located in the Haas Fine Arts building on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The performer is pianist Dr. Donald Patterson, Professor of Music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Here is a short introduction to Sonata in A Minor.
