VPN Installation and Use

In order to access your Shared Drives from an off-campus location, you must connect to a VPN.

Connecting to AnyConnect


If you have never connected to Cisco AnyConnect (the VPN client) before, you will need to download and install it.

NOTE: If you are using Windows 8, the VPN will need to be installed from the Desktop version of your web browser. Attempting to install the VPN while you are in full-screen Windows 8 Touch mode will not work.

  1. Go to vpn.uwec.edu in a web browser, and log in with your UWEC username and password.

  2. Click the words 'Start AnyConnect' as shown below.

  3. AnyConnect will proceed to download a small program onto your machine. Follow your own machine's instructions to allow and install so the program will download.

Windows 7


You may see the AnyConnect icon appear in the taskbar at the bottom right of your screen:

  1. If AnyConnect is not currently active, go to your Start buttonWindows 7 Start Buttonand click on the AnyConnect icon: Cisco Anyconnect Icon
    NOTE: If you do not have Cisco AnyConnect installed or if it does not appear on your system, try Connecting to the AnyConnect

  2. In the window that appears, make sure vpn.uwec.edu appears in the text box.

  3. Click Connect.

  4. Log in with your UW-Eau Claire username and password.

  5. When you are connected, you can log onto the drives the same as you would on-campus. Learn more here.

  6. Access your information (documents, etc...)

  7. To disconnect from the drive, click on the AnyConnect iconCisco AnyConnect Connected Icon in Taskbarin the taskbar at the bottom of your screen and click Disconnect.

Troubleshooting

On Windows 7, you may have the following pop-ups during the downloading process:


Note: You may first have a yellow bar appear at the top of your screen; click on the bar and then click Install This Add-on for All Users on This Computer.

Windows 8


You may see the AnyConnect icon appear in the taskbar if you select the small arrow at the bottom right of the screen:

  1. If AnyConnect is not currently active, go to the Start Menu and type "Cisco AnyConnect", then click on the AnyConnect icon: Cisco Anyconnect Icon
    NOTE: If you do not have Cisco AnyConnect installed or if it does not appear on your system, try Connecting to the VPN

  2. In the window that appears, make sure vpn.uwec.edu appears in the text box.

  3. Click Connect.

  4. Log in with your UW-Eau Claire username and password.

Mac OSX


  1. To open the VPN, click the magnifying glass at the top right corner of your screen and type "Cisco AnyConnect" in the search box. When it appears in the list, click the name to start running AnyConnect.

  2. In the window that appears, make sure vpn.uwec.edu appears in the text box.

  3. Click Connect.

  4. Log in with your UWEC username and password.

  5. When you are connected, you can log onto the drives the same way as on-campus. Learn how to do that here.

  6. Access your information (documents, etc...)

  7. Disconnect the Cisco AnyConnect by right-clicking on the AnyConnect icon in the dock at the bottom of the screen AnyConnect Large Icon and from the menu, select Disconnect.
