Apple Mobile Devices

Apple iOS devices natively support the Exchange email services UW-Eau Claire uses and are easily configured. You will need to have a wireless network connection in order to complete the setup process, but you may also attempt to set up an iPhone over the cellular data network.

Warning: After configuring an Exchange ActiveSync account, all existing contact and calendar information on the iOS device is overwritten. Additionally, iTunes no longer syncs contacts and calendars with your desktop computer. You can still sync your iOS device wirelessly with MobileMe services. You may want to first add all of your contacts into Exchange before synchronizing contacts.  In addition, it is recommended that you create a backup of your iPhone's data in iTunes before synchronizing with Exchange. Please visit http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414 for instructions on how to perform these steps.

Protecting Your Device

Once your iOS device is configured with Exchange there are no authentication steps required to access your email when using your device. To protect your device in the case of being stolen or tampered with, it is highly recommended you take the following steps to secure it.

Passcode Lock

One way to protect your device is to set a four digit passcode that will be asked for each time your device is accessed.

  1. Click on the Settings application.

  2. From the Settings column, select General.

  3. From the General column on the right, select Passcode Lock.

  4. Click Turn Passcode On.

  1. Type a four digit passcode of your choosing.

Optional: You can set your device to erase its data if the Passcode Lock attempt fails ten times.

Warning: This will delete all applications and data from your iOS device and will not be recoverable unless you have backed up your information on iTunes.

Connecting To Your Email Account

In order to access your email from your mobile Apple iOS device, you must first add the account to your system.

  1. Click on the Settings application.

  2. From the Settings column, select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

  3. From the Mail, Contacts, Calendars column on the right, select Add Account...

    Mail Contacts Calendars

  4. From the Add Account... column, select Microsoft Exchange.

  5. Enter your personal information into each text box:

    1. In the Email text box, type your UWEC email address
    2. In the Domain text box, type uwec.edu
    3. In the Username text box, type your username
    4. In the Password text box, type your password
    5. In the Description text box, type your UWEC email address

  6. Once all fields are filled in correctly, click Next.

    Exchange info

  7. The device will attempt to verify and configure your Exchange server connection automatically. If you are using the UWEC wireless connection, this process may take up to 5 minutes to complete. Once the information is verified, you will see a new field that indicates the server as webmail.uwec.edu. If nothing is listed for the server and the auto configuration failed, you can enter the server name manually and click Next.

  8. Select which items you wish to sync to from Exchange. By default, your email and calendar are enabled. Additionally, you can sync your contacts with Exchange, but doing so will overwrite your phone's local data. See warning at top for details.

Remotely Erasing iOS Device via Webmail

Another option exists within Webmail to remotely wipe your device the next time it attempts to synchronize with the Exchange server.

Warning: This will delete all applications and data from your iOS device and will not be recoverable unless you have backed up your information on iTunes. This process does not delete your email account, contacts, and calendar items within your Exchange account, but rather deletes that information on the device itself.

  1. Click Options, in the upper-right corner.

  2. From the Options pull-down list, select See All Options.

  3. In the navigation window on the left-hand side, select Phone.

  4. Make sure the Mobile Phones tab is selected and highlight the appropriate device from the list.

  5. Click Wipe Device.

Note: If your device has been successfully wiped, you will receive an email confirmation. Your device will continue to remotely wipe and send notifications if any attempt is made by that device to reconnect with Exchange and your email account.

Removing Exchange Account Synchronization

You my want to temporarily remove your email account access from your iOS device.  All of your email, contacts, and calendar items will remain on the Exchange server.

  1. Click on the Settings application.

  2. From the Settings column, select Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

  3. At the top of the right-hand column, select the email account you wish to delete.

  4. Scroll to the bottom of your account's settings and click Delete Account.
