Learning and Technology Services has established electronic mail backup and retention practices which are intended to ensure the overall integrity of user data. The overriding purpose of the email backup practice is to enable LTS to fully recover user data in the event of a catastrophic hardware failure of the email servers.
Full backups of all the Exchange email server mailbox databases are performed daily. These backups are written to disk and stored for 14 days, before being overwritten. No tape backups are performed; all backups are written to disk only.
In most cases end users are capable of recovering accidentally deleted email using the "recover deleted items" feature in Outlook or Outlook Web Access. This is the only way users can recover deleted email, since recovery from backups is reserved only for catastrophic situations.
