For the better portion of six months, members of LTS have been coordinating with Housing and University Centers in creating a plan to upgrade television service to all of campus. This new plan will provide high definition (HD) signal to all buildings on campus including all residence halls, Davies Center, and all academic buildings. The plan for this service was put out to bid and UW-Eau Claire received a total of five bids back from companies. After review of the bids, it was concluded that Charter Communications had the low dollar amount and met the bid requirements.
How will this work?
As UW-Eau Claire moves forward with Charter Communications, the plan is to
- Bring the television signal to UW-Eau Claire.
- Transport that signal over our fiber network to the primary networking location in each building.
- From the primary networking location, the signal will be transported over coaxial cable within the buildings to the needed final locations.
Charter Communications will be here in the coming months to get their equipment installed and setup via coordination with LTS. Once configured, all residence halls and Davies Center will switch over to the new signal at the end of the semester with other needs to be switched over as soon as possible.
What are the benefits?
By moving to a single television provider for campus, UW-Eau Claire will be able to save an estimated $75,000 annually, will be able to provide television service to needed locations and to students living in the residence halls without the use of a set top cable box. Students will get HD quality television service and the University as a whole will save significantly. By working together and collaborating with all parties, LTS, Housing, and University Centers was able to bring a needed solution and service to our campus.
How do we request the new television service?
An eForm containing specific cost information and procedures will be available soon. Look for it in the Business Services department form list. Submitting that form will kick off the purchasing and approval process.
