On the Cutting Edge

Do you know how to use a utility knife safely?

Utility knives are one of those tools that we all use now and then, often without even considering the potential for injury. But like so many other tools, a utility knife has the ability to hurt as well as help you. Here are some tips for using utility knives safely:

Choose the right knife for the job. No single one is suitable for every job.

Make sure the blade is sharp. A dull blade will need extra pressure exerted, which may cause the blade to slip or slide.

Take the time to think about what you're going to do. Have a plan for executing the task at hand.

Check the work area to make sure it's suitable. Is there enough light so that you can see what you're doing? Is there enough space to work safely? Is it free of distractions that could cause an accident?

Pay attention while you cut. Focus on the task. If you're mind wanders for even a moment, you could be badly cut.

Make sure the handle offers a good grip. Wipe it down if it's wet, oily, or tacky. Clean your hands if they're sweaty, sticky, or greasy.

Always cut away from yourself. This sounds like an obvious point, and yet you'd be surprised at how many people get seriously cut because they fail to follow this basic rule.
