Athletic Training

Description of Program

The athletic training major is housed in the Department of Kinesiology, which is in the College of Education and Human Sciences. Students that complete the major will receive a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. Program graduates will be eligible to take the BOC certification upon completion of program and CAATE requirements.

Formal application is made to the athletic training major during the second semester of the first year ofattendance. This will allow selected students to start the three-year course of study during the fall semester of the second year. The number of students admitted to the program is limited by resources available. Not everyone who applies can be guaranteed admission. Currently, approximately 12 students are accepted per year.

The University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire Athletic Training Education Program is accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). The athletic training major is a comprehensive major comprised of 120 total credits, with 61 from the major, and the remaining credits made up of general education requirements, University required credits, and elective credits.

The educational components of the program are not limited to the classroom. Clinical/field experience is a valuable educational tool and an area of emphasis in the athletic training education program through site rotations. Combining the classroom knowledge with the ability to practice clinical skills and proficiencies on student-athletes or other physically active individuals allows the athletic training students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and hands-on skills.

The primary clinical/field setting will be in the Athletic Training Clinic, which is located in Room 184 of the Olson Addition in the McPhee Physical Education Complex. Small satellite athletic training rooms located in Zorn Arena on the lower campus and in Hobbs Ice Arena, 915 Menomonie Street, may be used for clinical/field experiences. In addition, the exercise physiology lab located in the McPhee Physical Education Center may also serve as a clinical site. 

Additional clinical/field experiences have been established in the local high schools and sports medicine clinics in and around the Chippewa Valley. An agreement has been made with UW-Stout to use its athletic training facility as an affiliated site for athletic training students.

Mission

The mission of the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is to prepare students for certification/licensure as an Athletic Trainer and to work as a healthcare provider with the physically active population. The ATEP promotes this mission through a transformative environment that engages students through active participation in the course content and by embracing and offering experiential learning opportunities with the university and Chippewa Valley
communities.


Goals of Athletic Training Education Program:

  1. Graduate Athletic Training majors with a Bachelors of Science degree in four years (three years from admittance into the major);
  2. Encourage all athletic training students to register and take the BOC examination;
  3. Obtain a passing percentage on first attempts on the BOC examination above the national average;
  4. Provide a varied and diverse clinical education experiences for all athletic training students;
  5. Encourage scholarship at the university, state, regional, and national level;
  6. Infuse technology into the curriculum to enhance communication, inquiry, problem solving, and decision-making within athletic training.
  7. Encourage students to become involved in their professional association and through service work.


ATEP Learning Outcomes:

Graduates of UW-Eau Claire's Athletic Training Education Program will:

  1. Complete a Bachelors of Science degree in four years (three years from admittance into the major);
  2. Obtain a passing percentage on the first attempt on the BOC examination above the national average;
  3. Participate in varied clinical education experiences;
    • Obtain an understanding of the athletic trainer within the broader health care system.
  4. Demonstrate appropriate oral and written communication skills;
  5. Demonstrate the use of technological skills consistent with current practice in athletic training to enhance communication, inquiry, problem solving, and decision-making within athletic training;
  6. Apply knowledge of principles, concepts, and theories in the practice of athletic training;
  7. Promote and actively participate in professional associations and through service work.
    • Maintain membership in the National Athletic Trainers Association. 
    • Participate in local, state, and/or regional athletic training professional activities.
    • Participate in service learning activities associated with the program.

Admission Criteria

Candidacy Period

All freshman/transfer students that declare athletic training as their major on admittance to the University must meet with the Program Director in an advising group meeting before the start of the first semester. At this meeting, the admission requirements are discussed and the candidacy rotations are set-up. All students are required to complete 50 hours of observation with a certified athletic trainer prior to the application date of April 1st.  Students are assigned observation rotations, as their schedule allows, and continues until they have completed a minimum of 50 hours.

If students declare athletic training as his/her major at any other time during the fall semester, they will meet with the Program Director and start the candidacy process.  Because of time constraints, any student that declares athletic training as their major after the beginning of the spring semester will be advised to start candidacy in the following fall semester. Periodic meetings will be held throughout the fall and spring semester with the candidates to disseminate information, review observation expectations, and to provide information for the application process.

Application Period

As mentioned above, the application date each year is April 1st. At the time of application, students must submit:

  • a completed program application form;
  • transcripts indicating an overall GPA of 2.75 or higher on a minimum of 25 credits of university level degree work;
  • proof of the completion of 50 hours of observation under the direct supervision of a certified athletic trainer;
  • evidence of completing and passing a background inspection;
  • transcripts indicating completion of KINS 274 or hold a current American Red Cross CPR and First Aid card (or equivalent);
  • evidence of being tuberculosis free;
    • University Health Services offers TB tests
  • evidence of receiving at least two of the three required immunizations in the hepatitis B vaccine series (or a signed hepatitis B immunization declination) and verification of immunization history for measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, and diphtheria;
  • completion of KINS 204 - Introduction to Athletic Training with a grade of "B" (3.0) or higher;
  • documentation of compliance with the Athletic Training Education Program Technical Standards for Admission, which are based on the physical, cognitive, and attitudinal abilities that an entry-level athletic trainer must possess (see appendices for Technical Standards document).

 

After the application date, interviews will be scheduled for all candidates with the Athletic Training Education Program Committee, which will consist of the Program Director, one staff athletic trainer, two current athletic training students, and one faculty member from the Department of Kinesiology. Additional committee members may be added at the discretion of the AT program director.

Student admission will be based on the following criteria:

1.         performance evaluations by clinical supervisors – 30%
2.         interview – 30%
3.         cumulative University GPA – 40%

Each student will be given a numerical score for each of the above categories. The totals for each student will be ranked and approximately the top 15 students will be recommended to the Department Chair for admission to the program. Letters of acceptance status will be sent by June 15th each year. Students that are not accepted are encouraged to select another major at the University. Those students that choose to reapply again the following year are reminded that the major is a 3-year course of study once accepted and that reapplying will delay their graduation by at least one year.

Students accepted into the program will have to have a physical examination completed during the summer. Students will begin their athletic training course work and clinical education/field experiences in the fall.

Any cost incurred with application and acceptance into the program are the athletic training student’s responsibility. These costs may include, but are not limited to: fees for CPR and First Aid certification; Hepatitis B vaccinations, updates of other immunizations; physical examination, membership in the NATA, athletic training specific clothing, travel to and from clinical sites, and other items need for didactic and/or clinical study.

Accreditation
As of July 1, 2006, program accreditation
switched to CAATE, which now oversees all educational programs in Athletic Training and is currently accredited until the 2019-20 academic year. The Athletic Training major was initially accredited by CAAHEP in September of 2004. All students that graduate from the ATEP and meet the criteria established by CAATE will qualify to sit for the BOC certification examination.

Retention
Once admitted into the Athletic Training major, the student must meet the following criteria to remain in the major:

  1. maintain a 3.0 GPA overall in all athletic training core courses
  2. earn a grade of B- or better in all ATEP core courses. ATEP courses with a grade lower than B- must be repeated.
  3. must continue to be in compliance with the Athletic Training Education Program Technical Standards for Admission and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Code of Ethics
  4. Satisfactorily complete all clinical experiences and other required program criteria

To graduate from this program a student must achieve a 2.75 or higher overall GPA.

Remediation
Students who do not have a B- (2.7 GPA) or better in an ATEP core course may undertake a formal program of remediation in order to raise their grade to a passing level and assure mastery of the course objectives. The opportunity for a student to begin a program of remediation is at the discretion of the course instructor and the program director.

Remediation Procedures:

  • Faculty monitors the student’s performance throughout each course.
  • Students that find they are having academic difficulty must contact the course instructor and/or program director for additional assistance first.
  • Students must show that they have made an honest effort towards the course and are deserving of a remediation program.
  • The course instructor, the student, and the program director will design remediation programs collaboratively.
  • Each student that undertakes a formal program of remediation will be assigned weekly meeting times with the program director.

 

Transfer Students
Transfer students must meet all application requirements prior to application to the program. KINS 192 Introduction to Athletic Training must be taken on-campus. Those students transferring from another institution with an accredited (CAATE) athletic training program and have taken an equivalent course, may petition the selection committee to accept the course. Transfer students who are interested in the Athletic Training major should inform the Admission Office upon application for admission to the University and contact the Athletic Training Education Program Director.

Special Fall Admission Policy
For first time applicants only, that meet all of the stated admission criteria, may apply by November 1st for admission to the athletic training major. This application period is intended for students that enroll during the spring semester or transfer from another accredited athletic training program. Enrollment will be limited to the number of clinical positions available. Applicants that are considered during the special fall admission period and are not accepted at that time will be considered again during the spring application period.

Student Transportation
Students in the athletic training education program must provide their own transportation to and from clinical experiences.  Some clinical experiences may require travel to other communities.

 

Clinical Education


An important part of the Athletic Training Education Program at UW-Eau Claire is the hands-on experience for the students.  Clinical education experiences occur during prearranged times and locations and involve interaction with Approved Clinical Instructors (ACI) / Clinical Instructors (CI) and Athletic Training Students (ATS) each week at ATEP approved affiliated clinical sites. This allows athletic training students to practice and master the skills of the profession while providing safe and adequate health care for the student-athletes/patients under the direct supervision of an ACI/CI. As part of the ATEP, ATS’s are required to complete six (6) semesters (approximately 90 weeks) of clinical education experiences. Level II ATS will complete six 5-week rotations, Level III ATS will complete four 8-week rotations, and Level IV ATS will complete two 11-week rotations. The clinical education experiences are associated with the following classes: KINS 277, 280, 315, 316, 415, 416.

To provide a consistent progression in education, lists of clinical proficiencies and skills have been developed for each academic level.  Proficiencies will be directly related to specific athletic training courses and levels of education.  What is learned in the classroom will be practiced in the clinical education and evaluated in the Practicum and Lab courses and field experiences.

Each athletic training student is assigned clinical education experiences during their sophomore (Level II), junior (Level III) and senior (Level IV) year.  A clinical education experience is with one of the ATEP’s affiliated sites (e.g., university or high school setting, rehabilitation setting, physician’s office, or other appropriate allied healthcare setting) and is conducted under the direct supervision of an ACI/CI approved by the ATEP.

It is the program’s responsibility to ensure that athletic training students gain a wide variety of experiences by the time each one graduates.  To ensure this, each athletic training student will also be assigned with ACIs that work with various sports, activity, and populations with the goal of providing the athletic training student with a well-rounded experience.

The following requirements must be met for a clinical experience to be successful completed:

  1. The ATS must be enrolled in an ATEP course that has a clinical experience requirement;
  2. The ATS must be assigned to a clinical experience by appropriate personally within the ATEP and the experience must take place at ATEP affiliated clinical sites;
  3. The clinical experience must be directly supervised by an ATEP approved ACI/CI;
  4. The ATS must attend the experience weekly as arranged by the ATEP in conjunction with the ACI/CI;
  5. The ATS must be formally evaluated by the ACI/CI at least twice during the clinical education experience and receive an overall evaluation mark of a B- or greater during the experience;
  6. The ATS must complete a “Clinical Education Journal” at the end of each clinical rotation and this journal must be reviewed and discussed with the supervising ACI/CI, as well as signed before being turned in for course grading and documentation of completion of the clinical rotation;
  7. Finally, the ATS must receive a grade of B- or better in the associated course for the clinical education experience to be completed.



Assignment of Approved Clinical Instructors/Clinical Instructors

While involved in the field experience, athletic training students will be assigned an ACI or CI/FES. An ACI is a certified athletic trainer or other allied healthcare provider who has had additional training in clinical education.  A CI/FES is a certified athletic trainer or allied healthcare provider who has not gone through the additional training.  The ACI/FES will ensure that the athletic training student is being supervised at all times and is exposed to a wide variety of experiences, providing education on a daily basis. The ACI is responsible for evaluating clinical proficiencies and skills.

The ACI/FES serves as a source of information to assist the athletic training students with education, practice, and mastery of clinical competencies.  Another vital role of the ACI/FES, is to act as a mentor and enhance the athletic training skills during field experiences.

To expose athletic training students to a wide variety of techniques and educational opportunities, a rotation system between ACI/FES will be utilized.  ACI/FES will be assigned to sophomores, juniors, and seniors according to the duration and type of field experience each athletic training student is assigned.  Daily contact between the athletic training student and ACI/FES will occur at the junior and senior levels.
