Introduction of Other Members
Overview of the Honors Program Organization
- The Honors Program Organization, or HPO, is a student organization for members of the Honors Program,
and only members of the Honors Program are allowed to join.
Participation in HPO is completely voluntary, i.e., members of the Honors Program are not required to participate in HPO.
HPO is a great way to meet other students in the Honors Program. HPO is both a social and service organization.
Some of our regular events are the midnight scavenger hunt, pie night, BBC (Bowling and Billiards Center) night, volunteering for Special Olympics, and helping with Bowl for Kids Sake.
- Dues are $5 for the semester or $9.99 plus a one cent handling fee for the entire year.
- HPO gives away a $50 scholarship at the end of the year to the person with the most participation points.
Points are earned for attending meetings, honors conferences, or breakfast or pizza events sponsored by the Honors Program.
Points are also earned for participating in HPO community service, social, or fundraising activities.
The point system is outlined at http://www.uwec.edu/honors/hpo/index.htm#points.
- In addition to volunteering for Special Olympics, other service events HPO will be participating in this semester include:
- Crop Walk (October 9) - The Crop Walk is a fundraiser for Church World Service,
and 25% of the proceeds go to Feed My People. HPO members can either walk in the event; help with event setup, registration, teardown, etc.; or do both.
If you are interested in participating in the Crop Walk, please email Ryan for more details.
- Tidy Up the Town (October 29) - Tidy Up the Town participants rake leaves and provide other fall cleanup services from home-bound residents in the Eau Claire Area.
More details will be provided at future meetings.
- Jingle Bell Run/Walk (December 10) - The Jingle Bell Run/Walk is a fundraiser for the
Arthritis Foundation.
HPO members can either run/walk in the event; help with event setup, registration, teardown, etc.; or do both.
More details will be provided at future meetings.
- At the meeting before registration, we usually discuss what classes/professors we recommend to take or avoid.
Other than that, we usually don't talk much about academic issues.
T-Shirts
HPO is considering making T-Shirts this year.
If you have a design in mind, please bring it to the next meeting.
We commonly refer to ourselves as the Hippopotamus Protection Organization,
so you might want to include a Hippo in your design (but you don't have to).
Meeting times
- Meetings are tentatively set for every other Wednesday at 9pm.
- The next meeting will be Wednesday, September 28 at 9pm, location to be announced. Bring ideas of activities that you would like HPO to do.
