History/Social Studies Education

This page will describe the different majors you can choose if you want to teach history/social studies in a middle school or high school. It will also answer other questions you might have about your program. This site will not replace your faculty adviser, but it should help you understand your program better so that you can spend advising meetings discussing your personal situation and goals.

Students who want to teach middle or high school history/social studies have three options.:

• History teaching major with a teaching minor in another subject
• Social studies broadfield comprehensive major with a 36 credit history concentration
• Social studies broadfield comprehensive major with a 24 credit history concentration

• What are the advantages of completing the 36 credit history major as part of my degree in broadfield social studies?
• What standardized tests do I have to take to complete a major in history or social studies education? What are they like? And when do I have to take them?
• What can I do to improve my chances of getting a teaching job after graduation?

• What are the "gates" students have to pass through in the College of Education and Human Sciences?
• What GPA do I need to be admitted to my program in the College of Education and Human Sciences? And what factors does the committee consider besides GPA?

• Can I take any courses the semester I student teach?
