Map Network Drives: Windows 7

The process for mapping network drives on campus varies slightly depending on the computer you are using. The directions below should cover the different situations you may encounter.

Mapping a Network Drive on Campus

Campus Windows computers (e.g. campus lab computers, classroom teacher stations, office computers) will automatically connect to your H: drive and the W: drive upon login. You will personally have to map any additional network drives you want.

Mapping on a Campus Computer

  1. Click StartStart » click Computer on the right side.

  2. In the Computer window, click Map Network Drive.

The Map Network Drive pane appears.

  3. Map Network Drive Pane

  4. In the Folder text box, type the server name.
See common server names in the table below.
Optional: From the Drive pull-down list, select the appropriate letter for the drive you are mapping.

Example: If you are mapping to your department share, select the S: drive. However, in most cases other letters will work.

    Drive Address
    Home Drive (H:) \\staff.uwec.edu\username$
    \\students.uwec.edu\username$
    Department Drives (S:) \\staff.uwec.edu\deptsh$
    Projects Drive (P:) \\mass.uwec.edu\projects
    People Pages (L:) \\lucy.uwec.edu\username$
Instructor and Student Drive (W:) \\students.uwec.edu\deptdir
    Media Drive \\media.uwec.edu\sharename$
    Departmental Software Drive (J:) \\students.uwec.edu\software$
    Archive Drive \\mass.uwec.edu\archive$

  1. Optional: To preserve this mapping each time you log on, select Reconnect at logon.

  2. Click Finish.
The drive is mapped and ready to be accessed.

  3. If prompted, to connect to the newly mapped drive, type your username and password » click OK.

Mapping on a Personal Computer

When on campus with your personal laptop or desktop computer (which may be connected with an ethernet cable) and connected to UWECwireless or UWECreshall, you will connect to the network drives in a slightly different way.

  1. Click Start Start Button » click Computer on the right side.

  2. In the Computer window, click Map Network Drive.

    Map_Drive_Computer

The Map Network Drive pane will appear:

    Map_Drive_Folder

  3. From the Drive pull-down menu, select the appropriate letter for the drive you wish to map.

  4. In the Folder text box, type the server name. See common server names in the table above.

  5. Optional: To preserve this mapping each time you log on, select Reconnect at logon.

  6. Click Finish.

  7. It will then ask you to log in. Type in uwec\username (with "username" being your UWEC username) and password.

Note: It is important that you type uwec\ before your username. If you do not do this, it will not let you access the network drive. Notice as you do this that the Domain changes to uwec.

  8. Click OK. The drive is mapped, and a new window opens so you can view the contents of the drive.

Disconnecting a Network Drive

  1. In the Computer window, right click on the network drive you wish to disconnect.

  2. From the list, select Disconnect.
