iBooks Author


iBooks Author is an Apple application used to create books for publication on iPads. Before starting your iBook, it is important to know how iBooks can and cannot be used:

  • iBooks Author is exclusively designed for iPads and cannot be published on any other platform or device.
  • iBooks Author is not meant for content creation -- it is meant to be used to organize data into a book.
  • Completed iBooks are sent to Apple for publication. They can be published on the iBookstore.

Starting Your iBook

  1. Open iBooks Author.

  2. Choose a template.
    Note: You must choose a template. You cannot start a book from scratch; however, you will have the ability to reformat the text and replace the images in your chosen template.

  3. Name your iBook by clicking inside the Title textbox on the cover page.

  4. Copy in your information.
    Note: The Table of Contents will automatically populate as you create chapters and sections.
    Be certain to save your work often.

Book Title: By double-clicking on Book Title, you can name your iBook.

Intro Media: Click on Intro Media to drag a video or audio file from a Finder window onto your iBooks workspace. This media will play when the iBook viewer opens the iBook.

Table of Contents: Once you have created chapters and sections, you can click Table of Contents to view an overview of your iBook. This will also be included in the published version of your iBook.

Glossary: To add a term to your iBook Glossary, click Glossary. Then, click the plus sign below the search bar.

Page Format: To change the type of page (chapter, preface, section, dedication, foreward, etc.,) click the drop-down arrow in the bottom-right corner of the page thumbnail and select your desired page type.

Note: Chapters will also have drop-down arrows to the left. You can use these to show or hide the chapter sections. 

Toolbar

Below is a table of the icons on the toolbar, listed from left to right.

Icon Description
 Add Pages icon This button allows you to insert pages into the selected chapter. You will have the option to insert a chapter, section, or pages.
Note: If the sections are out of order, you can select a page and drag it to the desired location in the Book pane to correct the page order.
 Styles icon This button opens the Styles drawer to the right of the workspace. This drawer includes paragraph, character, and list styles.
Headings icon  This pull-down menu allows you to select a line style to surround the selected text box.
Text options icon  This pull-down menu allows you to select the character style of the selected text.
 

View icon

This pull-down menu allows you to select the view of your workspace, including page thumbnails, book outline, glossary toolbar, hide styles drawer, show layouts, hide format bar, show rulers, show layout boundaries, and show invisibles.
 Orienation icon This button allows you to switch between viewing your iBook in portrait and landscape orientations.
Note: It is important to switch between the two orientations. You may have to format both orientations.
 Font icon This pull-down menu allows you to select the font for the selected text.
 Font type icon This pull-down menu allows you to select the typeface of the selected text (i.e., regular, italic, bold, or bold italic).
 Font size icon This pull-down menu allows you to select the font size of the selected text.
 Font color icon This button allows you to select the text color of the selected text.
 Font background icon This button allows you to select the background of the selected text box.
 Text box icon This button allows you to insert a text box.
 Select Presentation Source This pull-down menu allows you to select a shape to insert.
 Tables icon This button allows you insert a table.
 Charts icon This pull-down menu allows you to select a chart to insert.
 Widgets icon This pull-down menu allows you to select a widget to insert. The options are gallery, media, review, keynote, interactive image, 3D, or HTML.
Note: It is recommended to add images as a gallery widget. This allows you to include a name and caption for the image, and it also allows users to expand the image when the iBook is downloaded onto the iPad.
Font quick type icon  These buttons allow you to change the typeface of the selected text. The options are Bold, Italic, or Underline, respectively.
 Text alignment icon These buttons allow you to change how the text is aligned. The options are align left, center, align right, and justify, respectively.
Spacing icon  This pull-down menu allows you to select the line spacing for the selected text.
 Columns icon This pull-down menu allows you to select the number of columns for the selected text box.
 Text format icon This pull-down menu allows you to select the list style for the selected text.
 

Preview icon

This button allows you to preview your iBook on an iPad.
Note: To preview, plug your iPad into your computer via the USB port. Then click Preview.

Publish icon 

This button allows you to publish your iBook.
Note: Review the Apple Support Publishing page to review your options before sending your iBook to Apple for publication.

 Inspector icon

This button allows you to show or hide the Inspector window which assists you with formatting components of your iBook.

 Media icon

This button allows you to show or hide the Media window which assists you with selecting audio, photos, or movies to insert into your iBook.

 Colors icon

This button allows you to show or hide the Colors window which assists you with selecting colors for components of your iBook.

Fonts icon 

This button allows you to show or hide the Fonts window which assists you with selecting fonts for text.
