VPN Client software restricts off-campus access to UW-Eau Claire network resources to UW-Eau Claire users while providing a secure, encrypted network connection.
The Cisco Systems VPN Client software can be downloaded for free from the LTS Help Desk website. Use of the software is subject to restrictions detailed in the license agreement. These restrictions are noted on the download page.
Go to the Help Desk site (networking.uwec.edu)
In the Login section, in the User text box, type your username
In the Password text box, type your password
Click LOGIN
On the page that appears, under Software Downloads, click CISCO VPN CLIENT
Under Downloads, click CISCO VPN CLIENT V4.0.2B (WIN 9X/NT/2K/XP)
The File Download dialog box appears.
Click SAVE
The Save As dialog box appears.
From the Save in pull-down list, select a location
RECOMMENDATION: Saving this file to the Desktop will make it easier to find. It can be deleted after the software has been installed.
Click SAVE
When the download has been completed, close the dialog box.
From the Desktop, double click the downloaded file
The WinZip Self Extractor dialog box appears.
Click BROWSE…

Click UNZIP
When the unzip has been completed, click OK
Click CLOSE
You must have VPN Client software installed on your computer in order to configure and make a connection to the network. These instructions assume that you have downloaded the file to your Desktop.
To install the VPN Client software, from the Desktop, double click SETUP.EXE
The VPN Client Installation Wizard appears.
Click NEXT
Select I accept the license agreement and click NEXT
For Destination Folder, leave the default path and click NEXT
The Ready to Install the Application screen appears.
Click NEXT
When you receive the message that the installation was successful, click FINISH
A dialog box appears indicating that you will need to restart your computer.
To restart your computer, click YES
Before you can connect to the UW-Eau Claire network, you must configure the connection in VPN Client.
Windows XP: From the Start menu, select All Programs » Cisco Systems VPN Client » VPN Client
Windows 2000: From the Start menu, select Programs » Cisco Systems VPN Client » VPN Client
The VPN Client window opens.
On the toolbar, click NEW![]()
The Create New VPN Connection Entry dialog box appears.

In the Connection Entry text box, type a name for the connection (e.g., UWEC)
In the Host text box, type vpn.uwec.edu
Select the Authentication tab
Verify that Group Authentication is selected
In the Group Authentication section, in the Name text box, type uwec
NOTE: This must be lower case.
In the Password text box, type uwec
NOTE: This must be lower case.
In the Confirm Password text box, type uwec
NOTE: This must be lower case.
Click SAVE
You are returned to the VPN Client window.
To exit the program, click the X in the upper right corner of the window
To connect, continue with Connecting with VPN Client
When you want to access UW-Eau Claire network resources or the Internet, you need to connect using VPN Client.
Windows XP: From the Start menu, select All Programs » Cisco Systems VPN Client » VPN Client
Windows 2000: From the Start menu, select Programs » Cisco Systems VPN Client » VPN Client
The VPN Client window opens.
On the toolbar, click CONNECT![]()
The User Authentication dialog box appears.
In the Username text box, type your UW-Eau Claire username
In the Password text box, type your UW-Eau Claire password
In the Domain text box, type uwec
Click OK
After authentication is completed a lock icon appears in the System Tray.![]()
You are now connected to the UW-Eau Claire network over an encrypted network connection.
In the System Tray, right click VPN CLIENT CONNECTED
» select Disconnect
