Basics of Working with SGS

This document addresses the basics of using the Student Global Server (SGS) in the general access labs.

return to topConnecting & Disconnecting

When working in the general access Windows computer labs, it is important for students to connect as themselves. If a student sits down at a station and is not required to connect, it means that the previous student did not disconnect and the machine is still mapped to the previous student's H: drive. The current student will need to disconnect the previous student and then connect as himself or herself.

When students log on, they are connected to the SGS; drives are mapped for access to their data and their profile settings are reestablished.

Connecting to SGS

You will be logged on to the computer as yourself which includes automatic mapping to your H: drive and viewing your profile settings. If you are working in the general access computer labs, the J: drive and W: drive will also be mapped automatically.

  1. Press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete]

    This is the same as your email user name.

  3. In the Password text box, type your password
    Your initial password is uwec? followed by your pin#. Example: uwec?1234

    If not, from the pull-down listing, select UWEC

Disconnecting from SGS

When you are done with your Windows 2000 session, it is critical that you disconnect. Disconnecting is essential to:

Disconnecting from SGS: Start Menu Option

  1. From the Start menu, select Shut Down...
    The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.

  2. Select Log off username

  3. Click YES

Disconnecting from SGS: Keyboard Shortcut

  1. Press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del]
    The Windows Security dialog box appears.

  2. Click LOG OFF...
    The Log off dialog box appears.

  3. Click YES
    WARNING:
    If you are logging off, wait until the [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del] message appears in case any error messages appear that you need to respond to. Failure to do so may leave your session active for another person to access your data and email.

    If you are shutting down the machine, make sure you wait until the "Okay to Shut Down" message appears or the machine automatically shuts down (depends on individual system hardware and setup). Failure to wait until the message appears can corrupt your profile and corrupt system files on the computer making some programs and features inaccessible.

return to topChanging Passwords

Additional security can be obtained by changing your Windows 2000 password regularly to something others are unlikely to guess. Windows 2000 passwords are case sensitive.

NOTE: Because your Windows 2000 password is used as your email password, changing your Windows 2000 password will also change your email password.

Disk Quota: Each student is allocated 50 MB of space. Once the 50 MB quota is met, students will not be able to save files or receive new messages. Students will be required to clean up their space before continuing to work. If additional space is required, students may want to use a Zip drive (users must supply their own Zip disks) to expand their space.
