Scanning graphics enables you to convert paper images to on-screen images and then load them into a document to enhance them for a more professional appearance. This document will introduce you to DeskScan II for scanning graphics.
From the Apple menu, select DeskScan II
At the scanner, place your graphic face down on the scanner copyboard
HINT: Use the red triangles as a guide.
From the Type: drop-down menu, select an image type based on your graphic
From the Path: drop-down menu, select a print path according to your printer and application
For printing in Library 1108, select LaserJet 4
For printing in other general access computer labs, select LaserWriter NT, NTX
Click PREVIEW
With the pointer tool, drag the selection box around your desired graphic
The selection box enables you to capture a specific section of the image to scan.
With the arrow, click and drag over the portion of the graphic that you want to scan.
In the Scaling dialog box at the side of the screen, scale the image to the appropriate size
HINT: If more adjustments are needed, review the Optional Steps of this document.
When you are satisfied with the scan, save it to your diskette.
To save your graphic to your diskette, click FINAL
OR
From the File menu, select Save As ...
In the File name: text box, type the filename
From the File Format: drop-down menu, choose the appropriate image format
Click SAVE
Once the graphic is on your diskette you can add it to other programs. It can also be edited using a graphics program.
From the File menu, select Print
To print the page currently in the Preview area, in the From: text box, type the page range
To print the entire job, click ALL
Click PRINT
HINT: Be patient! It may take a few minutes for the image to process to the printer.
Once the image is scanned you may make adjustments the scannable area of the graphic. The image will appear in the selection area. You will notice that different types of pointer icons will appear when you point to specific areas of the graphic. The following pointer icons will enable you to resize the scannable area of your graphic:
Two-sided horizontal arrow: you may drag the left or right sides of the selection box to resize it
Two-sided vertical arrow: you may drag the top or bottom of the selection box to resize it
Four-sided diamond crossed arrow: you may click inside the selection box and move the entire selection area
Four-sided square arrow: you may drag corners to resize the selection box
Plus sign: you may click outside the selection boundary to create a new selection area
To further enhance and adjust your graphic, you may complete the following steps depending on which best fit your needs:
Click ZOOM
This rescans the image so that it fills the Preview screen. You can make the image even larger by selecting a smaller area and clicking ZOOM again.
To adjust brightness and contrast automatically, click the AUTOMATIC EXPOSURE button located between the Brightness and Contrast controls
Scale your graphic according to the size you want it to be
For best results, the scanned graphic should be as close to the final size as possible.
When you are satisfied with the scan, follow the save instructions in the Saving the Graphic section of this document.
