Adding Jump Lines

Adobe InDesign CS2 allows users to add jump lines to indicate when stories continue on, or from, other pages. A jump line is a line of text that might say, "Continued on page 3." When you use a jump line, the page number automatically updates if the pagination changes.

NOTES:
For your jump lines to work properly, the text boxes of your story must be threaded, and the text box for your jump line must touch or overlap the text box to which it applies. For additional information, please refer to Using the Selection Tool with Text.

  1. From the Toolbox, select the Type ToolType Tool button

  2. Click and drag to create a new text box above or below the text box you want to add a jump line to

  3. Using the Selection ToolSelection Tool, move the text box so it overlaps the text box of the story you want to add the jump line to
    NOTE: The text boxes must overlap, for the jump line to work correctly.

  4. From the Toolbox, select the Type ToolType Tool

  5. In the text box, type the desired text for your jump line
    EXAMPLE: Continued on page

  6. For text that continues forward from the current page, from the Type menu, select Insert Special Character » Next Page Number
    For text that continues from a previous frame, from the Type menu, select Insert Special Character » Previous Page Number
