This document contains information on connecting to a printer in Windows 7.
Connecting to a Network Printer
If you work in a network environment, you will want to connect to one or more printers.
Note: These instructions assume that you know the network name of the printer you wish to add.
- Click on the Start button
and select Devices and Printers.
The Devices and Printers window appears.
- Below the address bar, select Add Printer.
The Add Printer window appears.
- Select Add a network, wireless, or Bluetooth printer.
- The dialog box refreshes with a new selection of options.
- Select The printer that I want isn't listed.
- Click on the circle next to Select a shared printer by name.
Notes: Do not click browse. Begin the printer name with \\printoffice or \\printlab followed by a backslash and the specific printer name. (e.g., \\printoffice\citi04; \\printlab\lab-ol1108-duplex-e)
- Click Next if the driver does not begin installing automatically.
The dialog box refreshes with a new selection of options. Windows printer installation box will appear and the driver will install.
- A window will appear that says "You've successfully added printername on print office." Click Next.
- Optional: If you would like this to be your default printer, check the box next to Set as the default printer.
- Click Finish.
The printer has been added.
Connecting to a Local Printer
If your computer is not connected to a network and your local printer does not show up in the Devices and Printers window, you will want to add a local printer.
- Click on the Start button
and select Devices and Printers.
The Devices and Printers window appears.
- Below the address bar, select Add Printer.
The Add Printer window appears.
- Select Add a local printer.
- The Choose a printer port option appears. Make sure the circle next to Use an Existing Port is selected.
- Click Next.
The Install the print driver screen appears.
- Select your printer's brand name from the manufacturer box, then select your printer's model/series number from the Printers box.
- Click Next.
The Type a printer name page should already have your printer name entered.
- Click Next.
The driver will install.
- The Printer Sharing screen will appear.
- Select the circle next to Do Not Share this Printer.
- Click Next.
- Optional: If you would like this to be your default printer, check the box next to Set as default printer.
- Click Finish.
Your printer icon will now appear in the Devices and Printers window.
