This is an exciting time for graduate studies at UW-Eau Claire. As part of the university-wide strategic planning process, we have been having several discussions among our graduate faculty and staff about new ideas. We have had some suggestions for entirely new graduate degree programs, for new student support efforts like a second graduate student recruitment fair or an orientation program for all new graduate students, and special presentations on topics such as responsible conduct of research.  Perhaps you have an idea as well?  If so, we’d love to hear it, so let us know!  Your graduate experience at UW-Eau Claire is largely what you make of it. You can be heavily involved, or just passing through.  We hope you’ll choose the former. Nancy and I are eager to hear from you on any topic of your choosing.  Please take advantage of us, and have a great Spring semester.

2008/09 GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP & FELLOWSHIP APPLICATIONS DUE BY MARCH 1

Please be aware that assistantships and fellowships are not automatically renewable from one academic year to the next.  You must reapply for subsequent academic years by submitting an application by the March 1 priority deadline, with your application considered on a competitive basis.  If you would like to reuse your letters of recommendation that were previously submitted, you are allowed to do so, just make this clear on your application.  The March 1 deadline also pertains to the Advanced Opportunity Program (AOP) Fellowships for the 2008-09 academic year.

The Application for Graduate Assistantship and/or Fellowship form may be downloaded from the following website:  http://www.uwec.edu/admissions/graduate/fininfo.htm.     If you have any questions about the application process, please contact Graduate Studies.

DO YOU HAVE COPYRIGHT QUESTIONS?

In the preparation of a thesis or writing a paper, the author must consider the copyright laws that have evolved to provide protection of the work created by others. Copyright laws also protect the author’s original thesis work. Guidelines are available for fair use of copyrighted printed material, computer programs, and off-air television recording on the Copyright Office web site (http://www.uwec.edu/copyright/).

For further information about permission forms for securing copyright approval, please contact the office of the Director of Libraries, Library 3005, 836-3715, or visit the Copyright Office web site.

There is a new study lounge for graduate students and nontraditional students?  It is called the Oasis Room, and it is located in Davies Center 127.

There is also a study lounge in the library for graduate and nontraditional students.  Just go to the front desk of the library and request the combination for Room 5029.  You may be asked to show your Blugold ID card.

WHY ARE THERE STILL "PR'S" ON MY TRANSCRIPT?

Students often inquire as to why their thesis (or Research Paper) credits appear to still be in progress (“PR”) even after they have submitted their thesis/paper.  Since grades are not received for these credits, the “PR” will always remain on your transcript.  However, once the bound copies have been submitted to Graduate Studies, a completion date will be noted on your transcript, which will appear as:

Month-date-year          COMPLETED THESIS
DEPT 799 TITLE AVAIL-REGIST        # of credits

If you should encounter a problem with an employer doubting your completion, please have them contact the Office of Graduate Studies.
