Rectangular
houses come in two different orientations to the street they face:
parallel
or perpendicular.
The orientation is determined by the direction of the ridge pole
of the house. In the 1920s-1930s the short sides of rectangular houses
faced the
streets (type A), but by the late 1940s and beyond, the long sides
faced
the streets (type B). The change in orientation was common as
lot sizes began to
grow after WWII.
