Eau Claire: Window Types

Window types and shapes help date houses. Window types refer to the kind of window:  bay, picture, standard, or windows in dormers. Click on TYPES to learn more.

Windows are called "casement" when they swing out from their side mounts--steel sashes were common in the 1930s Art Deco houses, and wooden sashes were common in the1950-1960s International Style houses.  Windows are more commonly "double-hung" allowing the bottom half of the window to be opened. Windows are "fixed" when they can not be opened.

Windows also are made in many shapes, reflecting the tastes of particular groups during certain historical eras. Click on SHAPES to learn more.
