Eau Claire: 1860

In the 1860s Eau Claire had its greatest population increase in its history.  The thriving lumber industry made the "lumber barons" very rich and successful, and most of the population was employed by one of their mills.  Eau Claire developed many of its public facilities during this period, including the Eau Claire Court House.
1862 "The landlords met to fix prices and settled on $1.25 for one night's lodging for man and team including supper, breakfast, and hay."
1862 The first Eau Claire County Court House was built.
1863 About 15,000 men were engaged in logging on the Chippewa and Eau Claire rivers, and their tributaries.
1865 Eau Claire established its fourth public school.
1868 The village of Eau Claire became a political unit and Adin Randall's first and second additions were added to the village.
1869 The Chippewa River was first bridged.
1869 Shawtown, a company mill town, became the third village in Eau Claire.
