When John Walter, who owned and operated the Walter Brewing Company, bought his first cars, he had a two-car stucco and brick garage built – typical of the 1910s – in back of his 1897 mansion and next to the alley (on the left) but facing the street.
His conspicuous consumption was illustrated by the cutstone “Garage” sign (A). A close-up appears next. The large windows (B) on the side of the garage provided interior lighting before electric lights became common. The white aluminum pull-down doors (C) were added in the 1990s.
