Race & Class in Charleston

The size and quality of the "single" Charleston house style is reflected in different neighborhoods:

• Black areas (dark green areas of the race map): one-story houses were built by freed and poor blacks during Reconstruction
• Moderate-Income White areas (yellow areas of the income map): two-story houses
• High-Income White areas at the tip of the peninsula (greenest area on the income map): multiple-story mansions
