French Canada: Communal Pastures

Communal fields, or "commons" as they are called in the English system, were very much part of the French feudal
system that was established in New France. Why is this communal pasture located on land in the St. Lawrence River?

Answers:

• most of the communal land has long since been divided into private property
• generally,  less accessible or poorer land has remained in communal ownership and use
