Florewood River Planation Domestic Space

About one quarter of US slaves were used for domestic work.
Tour this plantation, by clicking on each building.
Out of what materials are the paths made?
Why are the paths wider to the cookhouse and the privy?

Answers:
  • path: red for brick! -- brick paths reduced the amount of dirt and mud that was carried into the mansion
  • wider paths: 1) the privy was used by the planter's family and guests; 2) food was carried at least four times a day (including afternoon tea!) from the cookhouse to the mansion.
