Florewood
Plantation Commissary
This rather elaborate Greek Revival commissary was used to
distribute monthly supplies to the slaves. After the Civil War, commissaries
continued to be operated by plantation owners as general stores. Sharecroppers
now bought their daily needs here because the commissary was close to their
homes and the planters gave them credit.
How might
a scene have looked when the workers were actually using a
commissary?
What was the bell tower used
for?
