Chicago: The Loop

  • State Street runs north-south through the Loop, or the CBD. It functions as the mass retailing district, including all the big department stores, such as Marshall Field and Company and Carson, Pirie, Scott.
  • The Marina Towers sits right on the Chicago River and combines apartments, stores, movie theaters, and a marine--all in one distinctively-designed building.
  • The Wrigley Building is an earlier example of Chicago's leadership in architectural and urban design.

  • Major hotels (e.g., Palmer House) and art galleries (e.g., the Art Institute) are found in the Loop as well.

  • La Salle Street (photo) is the financial district with its banks and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange or Chicago Board of Trade at the end of the street.
