New Resort Spaces

What does this 1970s resort town on the panhandle of Florida represent: authenticity or placelessness?

Answers:

  • the developers of Seaside wanted to re-create the feeling of a 19th century New England seaside village -- note the architectural details (porches, towers) and building materials (wood, metal roofs)
  • nothing like this ever existed along the Florida coast or elsewhere in the South, so is this an authentic or placeless place?
  • the 19th century social conditions that were reflected in porches and wooden fences no longer exist today
