In 1997 the Las Vegas telephone book listed 81 wedding chapels and ceremonies (conducted in churches). Most of the 50 actual wedding chapels are concentrated along Las Vegas Blvd. between the Stratosphere casino and downtown. Almost all of the larger and newer casinos now have wedding chapels as well, but they do not contribute to the distinctive cultural landscape of Las Vegas.
In 1997,
a wedding license was issued in Las Vegas
every 5 minutes, mostly in the
43 wedding chapels, two of which have Elvis Presley themes. Nevada's marriage
law does not require a blood test and a waiting period, while California's
marriage
law does. Take a look at the Little White
Chapel. What evidence indicates that this wedding chapel is
in a suburban
commercial
strip?
Answer: a large sign designed to be read from a distance
at high speeds;
a motel is found immediately off to the
right-hand side.
